Kerensa Voth
Faculty: 4th year, Agricultural and Food Sciences
Major: Agribusiness
Pursuing: Bachelor of Science (Agribusiness)

University 1’s strength is that it allows first-year students an opportunity to reaffirm their natural academic interests and weed out everything else. Kerensa Voth discovered that first-hand when she arrived to U1 with several interests but no definitive plan.

“U1 allowed me to enter the U of M without a clear purpose in mind. By taking a variety of classes that interested me it became clear that my main interests leaned towards the Agriculture faculty.”

More than ever, the 4th-year Agribusiness major knows that she made the right decision during her time in U1 as she becomes more active within the Faculty of Agricultural and Food Sciences and the agriculture industry in general.

“I take great pleasure in being highly involved within the faculty. This includes being a member of our student council, the Faculty of Agricultural and Food Sciences Student Organization (FASO) in various positions over the years. As well, after a year of Vice Presidency within our student group, the Agribusiness Students Association (ABSA) I am now the President for the 2009/2010 school year. “

Kerensa’s involvement means organizing and participating in a wide-range of events, such as the Manitoba Institute of Agrologists (MIA) Barbeque, the “Growing the Opportunities” Dinner, and the traditional “Aggie Bedpush” where a bed is pushed from Brandon to Winnipeg in support of charity.

“These events have made my student experience at the U of M really memorable. It is through these involvements I’ve had a chance to meet and get to know students from backgrounds both similar to mine as well as extremely different. The lifelong friends that I have made are by far the best part of being a student.”

Last summer, Kerensa worked for agrochemical company Dow AgroSciences in Regina. She hopes to continue working with the company after graduating, but would also be open to spending some time promoting the agriculture industry.

“I’d like to work with agriculture or science programs in Winnipeg that help educate youth on what agriculture is all about and help change the misperceptions sometimes associated with the agriculture industry.”
