Farah Joy Rashid says the town where she grew up is smaller than the U of M’s Fort Garry campus.
“My biggest shock in coming to the University of Manitoba was how huge it seemed to me,” she says. “And not just the campus - my first class had 300 people in it. The first decision I had to make was, where do I sit? But then I recognized some faces from rez and that made me feel better.”
Joy believes living in university residence her first year eased her transition from the small town of Morden to the city of Winnipeg.
“You have instant friends when you live in rez,” says Joy. “And the Resident Advisors do a great job of making sure everyone knows everyone. Those sorts of connections are especially important for students who aren’t all that extroverted - or international students who might be struggling with language and cultural differences. You pay for room and board, but you get a community.”
Since the Faculty of Pharmacy has moved to its newly constructed Apotex building at the downtown Health Sciences Campus, Joy moved right along with them!
“I have progressed from a small town student living in residence in my first year, to an active member of residence in my second year, and now I have 'graduated' to life as a student resident of the HSC Medical Apartments,” says Joy.
Participating in many student groups in high school, Joy continued her active involvement at university by becoming a volunteer floor representative in her first year. Two years ago she was hired as a Community Connection Coordinator for Housing and Student Life Services, aiding in the coordination of activities with a number of campus programs. She is now sitting on her faculty's student council as Interprofessional Liaison.
Joy, who is now in her 3rd year of Pharmacy, is also sitting on the executive of the group Universities Allied for Essential Medicines (UAEM) and is the VP Student Affairs for the group Manitoba Health Sciences Student Association (MaHSSA).
“I’m also my pharmacy class's 'Little Travelers' representative, helping sell 'Little Travelers' dolls. It’s an initiative started by a student at the U of M to raise money for HIV/AIDS affected people in South Africa. I like to stay involved.”
This past summer Joy kept busy working back home in Morden at the Boundary Trails Health Centre.
